Best Shopify SEO Apps in 2026: What We Install and What We Remove
Most Shopify stores need two or three SEO apps, not ten. This is the short list we install on client stores, the apps we remove on audits, and the SEO jobs Shopify already does without any app.

- Shopify already handles title tags, meta descriptions, URL handles, redirects, sitemaps, robots.txt, alt text and hreflang without an app. Bulk edits work through the product CSV.
- The apps we install most are a reviews app with review markup, one dedicated schema app when the theme’s markup is thin, and Shopify’s free Search & Discovery and Translate & Adapt.
- Pick one all-in-one SEO app at most. Two apps writing Product schema or meta tags create conflicts that are harder to find than the problem they solved.
- We remove auto-blog apps that publish unedited AI posts, duplicate schema apps, speed apps that lazy-load the main product image, and anything that redirects every 404 to the home page.
- Uninstalling isn’t always removal. Some apps inject code into the theme that stays behind, so check theme files and page source after every uninstall.
The best Shopify SEO app for most stores is a short list of apps. Shopify already handles title tags, meta descriptions, URL handles, redirects, sitemaps, robots.txt, alt text and hreflang without any app. On client stores we usually install a reviews app that outputs review markup, one dedicated schema app when the theme's structured data is thin, and Shopify's free Search & Discovery and Translate & Adapt apps. Everything else has to earn its place, because every app adds code, cost and another thing that can break.
The Shopify App Store lists more than 1,100 apps in its SEO category, and most listicles ranking for this search are written by app developers or affiliates. We don't sell apps. Below is what we install, what we remove on audits and why. Ratings, review counts and prices were checked on each App Store listing in September 2026 and change often, so confirm them before you install.
What Shopify does without an SEO app#
Before installing anything, check whether Shopify already does the job. Most of the time it does.
| SEO job | Built into Shopify? | Where | Do you need an app? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title tags and meta descriptions | Yes | "Search engine listing" on every product, collection, page and post | Only for templated bulk rules across thousands of pages |
| Bulk meta edits | Yes | Product CSV export and import ("SEO title", "SEO description" columns) | No for products |
| URL handles | Yes | Search engine listing section | No |
| 301 redirects | Yes | Content > Menus > View URL redirects, with CSV import | No, up to 100,000 on standard plans |
| XML sitemap | Yes | Generated automatically at /sitemap.xml | No |
| robots.txt | Yes | robots.txt.liquid in the theme | No |
| Canonical tags | Yes | Output by the theme | No |
| Image alt text | Yes | Media editor, or the "Image alt text" CSV column | Only for AI-written alt text at scale |
| Hreflang | Yes, with Markets | Markets in the Shopify admin | No |
| Structured data | Partly | Theme Product and Article markup | Often, see below |
| Product reviews and review stars | No | Yes | |
| Collection filters | Free Shopify app | Search & Discovery | Shopify's own app |
| 404 monitoring | No | Search Console's Page indexing report covers it | Optional |
Shopify documents the sitemap, robots.txt and URL redirect features in its Help Center. If an app's main selling point is one of the rows marked "No", you probably don't need it.
The Shopify SEO apps we install#
Reviews: Judge.me#
Reviews add unique, keyword-rich text to product pages and feed the review data in your Product markup. Judge.me is the reviews app we see most often and rarely need to replace: rated 5.0 from 47,432 reviews, with a Forever Free plan that includes unlimited reviews and rich snippets, and an Awesome plan at $15/month that adds Google Shopping integration, Q&A and more widgets. REVIEWS.io, Okendo and Yotpo do the same job; the SEO question is only whether the reviews are rendered in the page HTML and included in one set of Product markup.
Structured data: Ilana's JSON-LD for SEO or Schema Plus#
Theme markup is often thin: missing brand, GTIN, shipping and return details, or per-variant offers. When it is, we add one dedicated schema app and remove the theme's duplicate Product markup. Storing GTINs, materials and specs in metafields gives the schema app clean data to pull from.
- Ilana's JSON-LD for SEO: rated 4.9 from 441 reviews, $399 a year with a 7-day trial. Covers products, reviews from 20+ review apps, breadcrumbs, blogs, FAQs and videos, with a Google Merchant Center integration.
- Schema Plus: rated 5.0 from 591 reviews, $10.99, $20.99 or $34.99 a month with a 14-day trial. Product, review, Organization, FAQ and local business markup, with support for Judge.me, Yotpo, Okendo and Stamped.
The rule that matters more than the app: one source of Product markup per page. Test a product URL in Google's Rich Results Test after installing and make sure only one Product item appears. Our Shopify structured data guide covers what to include.
Images: TinySEO or Avada, only for heavy catalogs#
If your team uploads 5 MB photos straight from the camera, an image optimizer pays for itself in speed. If your images are already sized properly, it doesn't.
- TinySEO: SEO & Image Optimizer (by TinyIMG): rated 5.0 from 2,515 reviews. Free plan with 50 image optimizations a month and 3 cents per extra image, or $14, $23 and $49 a month for 1,500, 5,000 and 15,000 optimizations.
- Avada AI SEO Image Optimizer: rated 4.9 from 4,675 reviews. Free plan, Pro at $34.95/month and Enterprise at $99/month. Image compression and alt text plus meta, audit and speed features.
Run one image optimizer, never two. Compressing the same image twice loses quality for no gain.
Shopify's own free apps: Search & Discovery and Translate & Adapt#
Search & Discovery is Shopify's app for collection filters, search synonyms and product recommendations. Its 2.7 rating from 503 reviews mostly reflects complaints about on-site search results, but the filters are the standard way to add faceted navigation to a Shopify theme. Plan which filter URLs you want crawled; our faceted navigation guide explains the rules.
Translate & Adapt is free, rated 4.5 from 1,417 reviews, and handles translated content, SEO fields and URL handles for Markets. It auto-translates up to two languages; for more, you translate manually or use a paid tool. Machine translation is a starting point, not a finished page, especially for Chinese brands whose source copy is itself translated.
All-in-one Shopify SEO apps compared#
If you manage SEO in-house without an agency or a crawler, one all-in-one app can be useful for audits, bulk meta templates and broken-link alerts. Pick one.
| App | Rating (reviews) | Price per month | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO Manager by venntov | 4.6 (492) | $9, $29, $59 | Meta templates, 404 monitoring, Search Console link | Overlaps with a schema app |
| Plug in SEO | 4.6 (674) | $29.99, $49.99, $79.99 | Store-wide issue scanning, broken links | AI copy needs editing before publishing |
| Booster AI SEO + AEO Optimizer | 4.8 (5,480) | Free, $39, $69 | Automated fixes, images, broken links | "Automatic" changes you haven't reviewed |
| Avada AI SEO Image Optimizer | 4.9 (4,675) | Free, $34.95, $99 | Images plus audit in one app | Speed features that defer scripts |
| SEOLab | 4.9 (2,689) | Free | Stores on a tight budget | Many features switched on at once |
| Yoast SEO | 4.3 (176) | $19 ($190/year) | Teams who know Yoast from WordPress | No free plan, 14-day trial |
Whichever you choose, switch off the features that duplicate something else you run: its schema if you have a schema app, its image compression if you have an optimizer, its sitemap if Shopify's works.
The Shopify apps we remove, and why#
On almost every audit we uninstall something. These are the usual suspects.
- Auto-blog apps publishing unedited AI posts. Apps that write and publish posts on a schedule fill the blog with thin, near-duplicate articles. Google's spam policies describe scaled content abuse as many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings. AI drafting is fine; we use it too, with human editing and fact-checking before anything goes live.
- Duplicate schema. A reviews app, a schema app, an all-in-one app and the theme each outputting Product markup, sometimes with different prices or ratings. Keep one.
- Speed apps that break the page. Some lazy-load everything, including the main product image, which is usually the Largest Contentful Paint element. Measure in PageSpeed Insights before and after installing; if the numbers don't improve, remove it. Our Shopify speed guide covers what actually helps, and our guide to apps slowing down your store shows how to measure each app's cost.
- Redirect-everything apps. Apps that send every 404 to the home page look tidy, but Google advises against redirecting 404s to your homepage and can treat them as soft 404s. Redirect old URLs to their closest match and let genuine dead ends return a 404.
- Forgotten apps. Apps from past experiments that nobody logs into, and apps uninstalled months ago whose scripts still load on every page.
- Meta-rewrite apps running on autopilot. Bulk AI rewrites of thousands of titles can wipe out titles that were already ranking. Change meta in batches and compare in Search Console. Our guide to meta descriptions at scale shows how.
How to remove a Shopify SEO app cleanly#
Shopify's own uninstall guide notes that some apps add code to your theme that isn't removed automatically. Apps built with theme app extensions add blocks and embeds without editing theme code; older apps often write snippets straight into theme files.
- Export what the app manages. Redirects, meta templates and schema settings. Meta written to Shopify's native fields stays after uninstall; settings stored in the app don't.
- Duplicate your live theme so you can roll back.
- Turn off its app embeds in Online Store > Themes > Edit theme > App embeds, and remove its app blocks from templates.
- Uninstall from Settings > Apps.
- Search the theme code for the app's name and for
renderorincludetags pointing at its snippets, especially intheme.liquid. Remove leftovers in the duplicate theme first. - Check the live page source for scripts from the app's domain, run the Rich Results Test for duplicate markup and rerun PageSpeed Insights.
- Watch Search Console for the next few weeks, especially the structured data reports under Shopping and Enhancements.
Keyword research and rank tracking: use tools, not apps#
Some in-store SEO apps now include keyword suggestions and rank tracking. They are fine for a quick look, but they aren't where keyword strategy should come from. The data that matters most is free in Google Search Console: the queries you already get impressions for, your average position and which pages Google shows. For research beyond your own site, a dedicated tool such as Ahrefs or Semrush shows search volume, difficulty and what competitors rank for. Neither needs to run inside your store, and neither adds a script to your pages.
Apps for AI search: llms.txt and structured product data#
A new group of apps promises visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, usually by publishing an llms.txt file, adding JSON-LD and pinging search engines through IndexNow. Avada's AEO app, for example, is free, rated 5.0 from 393 reviews and generates llms.txt, llms-full.txt and agents.md files.
Our view: llms.txt is a proposed standard, cheap to add and harmless, and it doesn't replace what AI assistants actually use to recommend products: crawlable product and collection pages, accurate Product markup, a clean Merchant Center feed, reviews and mentions on sites they trust. You don't need a monthly app for a text file. Our free Shopify llms.txt generator builds a starting file from your store's structure that you can edit and publish.
What to check before installing any SEO app#
Five minutes of checking saves a clean-up later.
- Recent reviews, not the average. Sort reviews by newest. A 4.9 average built three years ago says little about the app today.
- How it touches the storefront. Apps that work through app embeds and app blocks can be switched off in the theme editor. Apps that ask to edit theme files are harder to remove.
- What it outputs. If it adds schema, meta tags or redirects, check whether something else on your store already does.
- Usage-based pricing. Image and AI apps often bill per image or per credit. Work out the cost for your whole catalog, not the first 100 products.
- Uninstall instructions. Look for them in the listing or the developer's help docs before you install. If there are none, ask.
How to choose the right Shopify SEO app for your store#
- Small catalog, doing SEO yourself: Judge.me plus one all-in-one app (SEO Manager, or SEOLab if budget is tight). Use Shopify's native fields for everything else.
- Large catalog (thousands of SKUs): a schema app, product CSV bulk editing, and a desktop crawler or Ahrefs Site Audit instead of an in-store audit app. App-based automation across 10,000 products is where mistakes get expensive. See our large catalog SEO work.
- Selling in several countries: Translate & Adapt with Markets, and check that no other app adds its own hreflang tags on top of Shopify's.
- Working with an agency: fewer apps. We would rather fix things once in the theme than rent a monthly fix.
Apps are tools for jobs Shopify doesn't do. They don't pick keywords, build collection pages or earn links, which is where rankings come from. If you want a list of what to check first, start with our free Shopify SEO checklist.
Questions people ask about this
Does Shopify have a built-in SEO tool?
Shopify has built-in SEO features rather than a single tool: editable title tags, meta descriptions and URL handles on every page, automatic XML sitemaps, canonical tags, native 301 redirects, an editable robots.txt and alt text fields. It doesn’t include an SEO audit or keyword research tool. For those, use Google Search Console, which is free, plus a crawler or one all-in-one app.
What is the best free SEO app for Shopify?
For most stores the most useful free apps are Judge.me’s Forever Free plan for reviews and review snippets, and Shopify’s own Search & Discovery and Translate & Adapt. For audits and meta templates, SEOLab is free, and Booster, Avada and TinySEO have free plans with limits. Install one all-in-one app at most, and turn off features that duplicate others.
Is Yoast SEO free for Shopify?
No. On the Shopify App Store, Yoast SEO costs $19 a month or $190 a year, with a 14-day free trial, as of September 2026. The free Yoast plugin is a WordPress product. On Shopify, Yoast is one option among several all-in-one apps, and many stores get the same results from Shopify’s native SEO fields plus a free or cheaper app.
Do SEO apps slow down a Shopify store?
They can. Apps that load scripts on every page, render widgets in the browser or leave code behind after uninstalling add weight and can hurt Core Web Vitals. Apps that only edit data in the admin, such as meta tag editors, usually add nothing to page load. Test with PageSpeed Insights before and after installing any app that touches the storefront.
How many SEO apps should a Shopify store have?
Usually two or three. A typical stack is a reviews app, one schema app or one all-in-one SEO app, and Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app, plus Translate & Adapt if you sell in several languages. More than that and features start to overlap, which is how duplicate Product markup and conflicting meta tags appear.
