Shopify llms.txt generator
Give AI assistants a clean, plain-text summary of your store: who you are, what you sell and which pages matter. Then publish it on Shopify in a few steps.
Draft an llms.txt from your live store
What llms.txt is, honestly
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at the root of a site (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives language models a short, structured summary and a list of the most useful pages. It was proposed in 2024 as a way to help AI tools read a site without wading through menus, scripts and pop-ups.
Be clear about what it does and doesn't do. It is not a ranking factor in Google. Major AI companies have not publicly committed to reading it. It costs very little to publish, it forces you to write down the facts you want AI assistants to repeat, and some AI tools and agents do fetch it. We treat it as cheap insurance, not a strategy.
The generator below builds the file from your answers. A typical Shopify llms.txt looks like this:
# Your Brand Name
> One or two sentences: what you sell, who it is for, where you ship.
## Key collections
- [Wood-fired sauna kits](https://yourstore.com/collections/wood-fired-sauna-kits): Outdoor barrel and cabin saunas
- [Cold plunge tubs](https://yourstore.com/collections/cold-plunge-tubs): Chilled tubs for home recovery
## Buying guides
- [How to choose a home sauna](https://yourstore.com/blogs/guides/how-to-choose-a-home-sauna)
## Company
- [About us](https://yourstore.com/pages/about)
- [Shipping and returns](https://yourstore.com/policies/shipping-policy)How it fits with Shopify’s agent files
Shopify has been adding machine-readable guidance for AI agents to storefronts, including an agents.md file aimed at AI shopping agents. It explains how an agent should browse the store and hand off to checkout. Shopify generates it and changes it as its agentic commerce features develop, so check what your own store serves today.
The two files do different jobs. Shopify's agent file is about how to shop on any Shopify store. Your llms.txt is about what your brand is: the facts, collections and guides you want AI assistants to use when they describe and recommend you. You want both.
- agents.md: how AI agents interact with the store (set by Shopify)
- llms.txt: what your brand sells and which pages matter (written by you)
- Neither replaces clear product content and structured data
How to add llms.txt to a Shopify store
Generate the file
Use the generator below, then read it through. Every fact should be true and every link should work.
Create a page template
Shopify doesn’t let you upload files to the root of your domain. In your theme, create an alternate page template that outputs plain text with no theme layout.
Create the page
Add a page, for example /pages/llms, assign that template and paste the file contents.
Add a URL redirect
In Online Store, Navigation, URL redirects, point /llms.txt to your new page. Shopify redirects work for paths that would otherwise return a 404, which /llms.txt normally does.
Check and maintain
Visit yourstore.com/llms.txt to confirm it loads. Update it when you launch collections or change policies. An app that serves the file is an alternative if you prefer not to edit the theme.
What moves AI visibility more than llms.txt
AI assistants mostly learn about stores from the open web: your product and collection pages, structured data, Merchant Center feeds, reviews, and what other sites say about you. If ChatGPT or Perplexity doesn't mention your brand, an llms.txt file alone won't change that.
The bigger levers are clear, factual content that answers buyer questions; accurate schema markup; consistent brand facts across the web; and being cited by the sites AI assistants already trust. That's the work we do under GEO and AI search. To see where you stand today, start with an AI visibility audit, or work through the AI search section of our Shopify SEO checklist.
