Structured data & Merchant Center

Shopify structured data that Google and AI can read

One clean JSON-LD graph per page instead of three apps fighting over it. Variants, prices, returns and shipping described the way Google documents them, and a Merchant Center feed that says the same thing as your product page.

What we find

Schema problems on almost every Shopify store

Issue 01

Three Product blocks on one page

The theme outputs one, the review app another, an SEO app a third. Prices and availability disagree.

Issue 02

Variants flattened

Only the first variant’s price, no ProductGroup, no way for Google to see sizes or colours as related products.

Issue 03

Missing return and shipping details

Search Console flags merchant listing warnings for missing return policy and shipping details.

Issue 04

Feed and page disagree

Merchant Center shows one price, the page another, or the currency changes by market. Products get disapproved.

Issue 05

No brand entity

No Organization markup linking the store, logo, social profiles and policies. Google and AI tools guess who you are.

Issue 06

Breadcrumbs that don’t match

BreadcrumbList that points at /collections/all, or at a collection the product isn’t in.

Under the product card

What Google reads on your product page

A product card and the JSON-LD behind it: ProductGroup, variants, Offer, shipping and return policy, brand and breadcrumbs.
Process

How we fix structured data

  1. Inventory every JSON-LD block

Crawl each template and list every structured data block, where it comes from and what it claims.

  2. Pick one source of truth

Usually the theme. We switch off duplicate output from apps and keep review data flowing into one graph.

  3. Build the templates in Liquid

ProductGroup and Product for variants, Offer with price and availability, shipping details, return policy, Organization, BreadcrumbList and Article.

  4. Validate

Rich Results Test, the Schema.org validator and Search Console’s merchant listing and product snippet reports.

  5. Align Merchant Center

Check the feed from Shopify’s Google & YouTube app against the page: price, availability, GTINs, shipping and returns.

Deep dive

Structured data on Shopify, explained

Product, ProductGroup and Offer#

Google documents two kinds of product results: product snippets and merchant listings. Merchant listings need a name, an image and an Offer with a price above zero in a valid currency. For products with variants, Google recommends a ProductGroup that nests each variant as a Product through hasVariant, with variesBy naming what changes, such as size or colour. Most Shopify themes output a single Product with one price. We rebuild it so every variant carries its own Offer.

Returns and shipping, stated once#

Google now recommends describing your return policy under Organization markup instead of repeating it on every Offer. We set that up once, add shipping details for the regions you deliver to, and keep product-level overrides only where a product really differs, like a hot tub with freight delivery.

Merchant Center and free listings#

Products synced to Google Merchant Center, usually through Shopify's Google & YouTube app, can appear in free listings across Google surfaces. Disapprovals often come from mismatches: a sale price on the page but not in the feed, a missing GTIN, or a market currency that doesn't match. We fix the feed and the page together.

Where FAQ markup stands#

Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023 and stopped showing them in Search in May 2026. We still write visible FAQs on key pages because shoppers read them and they answer the questions AI assistants get asked. We don't sell FAQ schema as a rankings trick.

Structured data isn't a ranking boost on its own. It removes ambiguity: this is the price, this is the brand, this is the return window. That clarity matters in merchant listings and for AI shopping answers. It is part of our GEO work, and it sits alongside technical SEO and collection pages.

FAQ

Structured data questions

Doesn't my Shopify theme already add schema?

Most themes add basic Product and Organization markup. It is often incomplete: one price for all variants, no ProductGroup, no return policy or shipping details. Apps then add their own blocks on top, so pages end up with two or three conflicting Product entries. We audit what your theme and apps output and consolidate it into one accurate graph.

Do I need a schema app?

Not necessarily. An app can be a quick fix, but it adds another layer that can conflict with your theme and review apps. We usually build markup directly into the theme in Liquid, pulling from product data and metafields, and switch off duplicate output. If an app is already doing the job well, we keep it and remove the duplicates instead.

Does structured data improve rankings?

Not directly. Structured data helps Google understand a page and makes it eligible for richer results like merchant listings with price, availability, shipping and return details. Those results can lift click-through rate. Clean product data also makes it easier for AI shopping tools to describe your products correctly. Rankings still come from relevance, content and links.

What are Google Merchant Center free listings?

Free listings let products from your Merchant Center feed appear across Google surfaces such as the Shopping tab without paying for ads. On Shopify the feed is usually synced through the Google & YouTube app. Your feed data needs to match your product pages, including price, availability and shipping, or items get disapproved.

Should we still add FAQ schema?

Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search in May 2026, after limiting them to government and health sites in 2023. So FAQ markup won’t earn you a rich result. We still recommend visible FAQ sections on key pages because shoppers use them and they answer real questions. The markup itself is optional.
