AI Overviews SEO for stores that already rank
Google says there is no special trick to appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. We agree, and that is good news for stores with strong SEO. The work is making sure the right pages are the ones Google pulls from when it breaks a buyer question into a dozen searches.
The rules are the same rules. The query is not.
Google's documentation is plain about it: to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. There are no extra requirements and no special markup.
What changes is how the question is searched. Google describes a query fan-out: the system splits one question into many related searches across subtopics, then builds an answer from what it finds. A buyer asking "best pool table for a basement with low ceilings" may trigger searches on table sizes, cue length, room clearance, slate versus MDF and delivery through narrow stairs.
A store that only has a collection page for "pool tables" is not in most of those searches. A store with a room-size guide, a slate comparison and a clear specs table probably is.
- Indexed and snippet-eligible is the only formal requirement
- Fan-out rewards depth across subtopics
- Structured data should match visible content

Clicks, controls and what to expect
Clicks change shape#
Industry studies have repeatedly found lower click-through rates on queries where an AI Overview appears, especially for simple informational questions. For a Shopify store, that usually means top-of-funnel guide traffic softens while commercial queries hold up better. We plan content with that in mind: guides that feed collection pages, and collection pages that can win the click when the buyer is ready.
You cannot measure AI Overviews on their own#
Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode data in the normal Web search totals. There is no separate filter. We watch trends by page type and query group, and use prompt tracking in AI Mode to fill the gap. Anyone offering you an exact "AI Overviews traffic" number is estimating.
Controls, used carefully#
nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex all limit how your content appears in AI features, as they do in regular results. Blocking Google-Extended controls use of your content for Gemini model training; Google says it does not affect Search. For most stores we recommend no restrictions on product and collection pages.
Shopping answers in AI Mode#
AI Mode draws on Google's shopping data for product answers, and Google has been rolling out agentic checkout there, starting with select US merchants. Clean Merchant Center data through Shopify's Google & YouTube channel matters here. The ChatGPT Shopping page covers how Shopify connects stores to these channels.

AI Overviews SEO questions
How do I get my Shopify store into Google AI Overviews?
Google says the only requirement is that a page is indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Beyond that, the pages cited are usually ones that already rank and answer a specific subtopic clearly. For stores, that means collection pages with real copy, buying guides that answer one question each, and accurate product data and structured data.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic to ecommerce sites?
On some queries, yes. Industry studies have found lower click-through rates when an AI Overview appears, mostly on simple informational questions. Commercial queries, where a buyer wants to compare and buy, tend to hold up better. The response is not to fight AI Overviews but to be cited in them and to strengthen the collection pages buyers click through to.
Can I see AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
Partly. Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the normal Web search type in Search Console, but does not break them out separately. You can see overall trends by page and query, and combine them with prompt tracking to understand where AI features are citing you.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my store from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to train and ground Gemini models outside Search. Google says it does not affect inclusion in Search, which includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. To limit how content appears in those features you would use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex, which most stores should avoid on product pages.
Does structured data help with AI Overviews?
Google says there is no special markup for AI features, but recommends that structured data matches the visible content. For Shopify stores, accurate Product, Offer, review and breadcrumb markup, plus complete Merchant Center data, helps Google understand your products, which supports both regular results and shopping answers in AI Mode.
