Speed & Core Web Vitals

Shopify page speed optimization that fixes the real bottlenecks

Leftover app code, oversized hero images on collection pages, render-blocking theme scripts and a dozen third-party widgets. We fix what slows real shoppers down, measure it with field data, and tell you honestly what it will and won’t do for rankings.

Usual suspects

What makes Shopify stores slow

Issue 01

App bloat

Every review widget, upsell popup and bundle app adds JavaScript. Some older apps leave snippets in theme files after you uninstall them.

Issue 02

Slow LCP on collection pages

A full-width slideshow banner, a lazy-loaded first image, or 48 product cards rendering before anything paints.

Issue 03

Images served too large

4,000-pixel PNG uploads shown at 400 pixels wide, no srcset, no width parameters, no modern formats.

Issue 04

Heavy theme code

Render-blocking scripts in the head, whole libraries loaded for one carousel, sections that load their JavaScript on every page.

Issue 05

Third-party scripts

Chat widgets, heatmaps, several ad pixels and a quiz loaded on page load instead of on interaction.

Issue 06

Layout shift

Review stars, announcement bars and late-loading fonts that push content down just as the shopper taps.

Straight answer

What speed does, and doesn’t do, for rankings

Core Web Vitals are part of how Google assesses page experience. Google's own guidance is clear that relevance comes first: a fast page with weak content won't outrank a slower page that answers the search better.

Where speed pays off:

  • Moving templates from poor to good on LCP, INP and CLS removes a real disadvantage.
  • Faster collection and product pages usually convert better, which matters more than any ranking change.
  • Lighter pages are cheaper to crawl on large catalogs.

Where it doesn't: pushing a Lighthouse score from 85 to 99 rarely moves rankings. We stop when the returns stop.

Process

How we speed up a Shopify store

  1. Baseline with field data

Shopify’s web performance dashboard, Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report and Chrome UX Report data. Real shoppers at the 75th percentile, not one lab test.

  2. Profile each template

Home, collection, product, blog and cart, weighted by how much organic traffic each template gets.

  3. Audit apps and scripts

Every app and third-party tag listed with what it loads, where and whether anyone still uses it.

  4. Fix on a duplicate theme

Changes go into an unpublished copy of your theme, tested on real devices, then published with your sign-off.

  5. Verify in the field

Lab tests confirm the fix; field data confirms shoppers feel it. Real-user numbers take a few weeks to fully update.

Deliverables

What gets fixed

  • App and script inventory with remove, defer or keep

  • Leftover code from uninstalled apps removed

  • LCP image preloaded, not lazy-loaded, on key templates

  • Responsive images with correct widths and srcset

  • Render-blocking JavaScript deferred or removed

  • Layout shift fixed on reviews, banners and fonts

  • Before and after Core Web Vitals by template

  • A speed budget for future apps and sections

Shopify speed, template by template

Lighthouse scores vs field data#

PageSpeed Insights shows two things: a lab test from one simulated device, and field data from real Chrome users when enough exists. Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1. Shopify's web performance dashboard reports the same three metrics from real visits at the 75th percentile. We work from field data and use the lab score to debug.

Why collection pages are usually the slowest template#

On many high-ticket stores the collection page carries most organic traffic, and it is where themes pile on the weight: a banner slideshow, filters, quick-view scripts, swatches and dozens of product cards. The LCP element is often a banner image that is lazy-loaded or far too large. Fixing that one element can do more than a week of minification.

The app audit#

Apps built on theme app extensions load through the theme editor and remove cleanly. Older apps sometimes wrote code straight into theme files, and that code can stay after uninstall. We list every app and script, what it loads on each template and whether it earns its place. Most stores have at least one app nobody remembers installing.

Images on Shopify's CDN#

Shopify's CDN can resize images on the fly. The theme has to ask for the right width with the image_url filter and output a proper srcset, or phones download desktop images. We also set explicit dimensions to stop layout shift and make sure the first visible image is never lazy-loaded.

Third-party scripts#

Chat, reviews, heatmaps and pixels add up. We delay what can wait for interaction and move tracking into Shopify's customer events where it fits. Checkout is hosted by Shopify, so most checkout speed is outside any theme's control. This work pairs with technical SEO and matters most on large catalogs.

FAQ

Speed optimization questions

Will a faster Shopify store rank higher?

Sometimes, and usually less than people expect. Core Web Vitals are part of Google’s page experience signals, but relevance and content quality come first. Moving from poor to good can remove a disadvantage, and it almost always helps conversion. Chasing a perfect Lighthouse score rarely changes rankings. We tell you which case you are in before you spend money.

Why is my mobile PageSpeed score so low?

The mobile lab test simulates a mid-range phone on a slow connection, so heavy JavaScript and large images hurt far more than on desktop. A low lab score doesn’t always mean real shoppers have a bad experience. Check the field data section first. If real users pass Core Web Vitals, a low lab score is mostly a debugging tool, not a crisis.

Do we need to switch themes to get faster?

Usually not. Most slow stores are slow because of apps, images and third-party scripts layered on top of a reasonable theme. We fix those first. If the theme itself is the problem, for example a heavily customized older theme with outdated code, we will say so and scope a rebuild through our Shopify development work.

How many Shopify apps is too many?

There is no magic number. What matters is what each app loads, on which pages and whether it earns its place. One badly built app can cost more than five lightweight ones. We list every app and script with what it adds to each template, then recommend removing, deferring or replacing the ones that cost more than they return.

Will speed changes break our store?

We work on an unpublished duplicate of your theme, test on real devices and publish only with your approval. Your live theme stays untouched until then, and the previous version remains available to roll back. Anything that affects an app’s behaviour is checked with you first, since some scripts do jobs your team relies on.
