Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for Product Searches: How Stores Get Cited

AI Overviews and AI Mode now answer many product research searches before anyone scrolls. Here is what Google has confirmed, the two ways a Shopify store shows up, the Merchant Center fixes that matter and how to measure it.

Key takeaways
  • Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. There is no extra technical requirement.
  • A store appears in two ways: as a cited web page and as a product listing from the Shopping Graph. Each is earned differently.
  • AI answers show up most on research searches like “best”, “vs” and “how to choose”, which is where buying guides and use-case collections win.
  • Merchant Center data now feeds AI shopping answers, so product titles, categories, GTINs and return policies are visibility work.
  • Search Console’s Generative AI report shows impressions only. Pair it with Web search clicks by page to see what AI visibility is worth.

Search "best pellet grill for beginners" on Google in 2026 and there is a good chance the first thing you read is written by Gemini, not by a store. AI Overviews summarize the answer at the top of the page. AI Mode turns the search into a conversation, with product panels, comparisons and follow-up questions.

For a Shopify store, that raises two practical questions. How does a store get cited in those answers? And how does it get its products shown in them? They are different mechanisms, and most stores only work on one.

This guide covers both, based on what Google has published and what we see in client accounts. If you want the broader picture of how AI search differs from classic SEO, start with GEO vs SEO for ecommerce.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode for shoppers#

AI Mode matters more for stores because shopping is built into it. Google says AI Mode combines Gemini with its Shopping Graph, which holds more than 50 billion product listings with prices, reviews and availability. When a searcher asks for "a quiet pellet grill for a small patio under $800," AI Mode can reason about the constraints and show products that match.

What Google has actually said#

Google's documentation on AI features (updated December 2025) and its guide to optimizing for generative AI features (updated July 2026) are unusually direct.

  • Eligibility. "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." There are no additional technical requirements.
  • Query fan-out. Both features may issue "multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" to build an answer, which is why they can show a wider set of links than a normal results page.
  • No special files or markup. No AI text files, no llms.txt, no special schema.org structured data.
  • Merchant Center. Google recommends keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information current so products can appear in AI responses.
  • Content. Unique, non-commodity content with high-quality images and video.
  • Tools. "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems."

So there is no secret AI Overviews tactic. There is a clear set of things that decide whether your pages and products are in the pool Google draws from.

Which product searches get AI answers#

Third-party studies disagree on exact rates, and Google changes behavior often. They agree on the pattern, and it matches what we see in client SERPs:

  • Research searches ("best cold plunge for home", "infrared vs traditional sauna", "how to choose a greenhouse") trigger AI Overviews often.
  • Pure buying searches ("buy [model name]", "[brand] pellet grill 700") trigger them much less. Shopping ads and product listings still dominate.
  • Long, specific searches with several constraints are where AI Mode shines and where specialist stores can beat big retailers.

That tells you where to focus. AI Overviews mostly affect your buying guides, comparisons and top-of-funnel collections. Your product pages and main collection pages still compete mostly in classic results and Shopping.

When AI Overviews or AI Mode answer a research question, they fan it out. For a grills store, a beginner prompt might look like this:

texttext
Prompt: "best pellet grill for beginners"

Likely sub-queries:
pellet grill vs gas grill for beginners
easiest pellet grill to use wifi
pellet grill temperature range smoking searing
pellet grill hopper size how long it lasts
  small pellet grill for patio
  pellet grill maintenance cleaning ash

The pages that get cited are the pages that answer those sub-questions clearly. Here is how that maps to a Shopify store:

Sub-questionThe page that answers itWhat makes it citable
Pellet vs gas for beginnersBlog comparisonA side-by-side table: learning curve, flavor, fuel cost, maintenance
Easiest to useCollection: Wi-Fi pellet grillsIntro text naming what "easy" means: app control, auto-ignition, temperature hold
Temperature rangeProduct pagesThe actual range in text, for example 180°F to 500°F, not only in an image
Hopper sizeProduct FAQPounds of pellets and hours of cook time at a stated temperature
Small patioCollection: compact pellet grillsDimensions, clearance needs and weight in text
MaintenanceCare guideCleaning intervals and steps

What these pages share:

  1. The answer comes first. One or two sentences that answer the question, then the detail.
  2. Numbers are in HTML text. Specs trapped in images, PDFs or tabs loaded by JavaScript are easy to miss.
  3. Trade-offs are honest. Who a product is for, and who it isn't for. AI answers are built around fit.
  4. Facts are consistent. If the product page says a 5-year warranty and your Amazon listing says 3, you give the system a reason to hedge.

Our high-ticket buying guides post shows how to structure the long pages, and collection page SEO covers the use-case collections.

Way 2: Get your products into AI shopping results#

Product panels in AI Mode, and product results that sometimes accompany AI Overviews, come from the Shopping Graph. For a Shopify store, the main door into the Shopping Graph is Merchant Center, usually connected through Shopify's Google & YouTube app. Shopify also sends Shopify Catalog data to AI Mode and Gemini through its agentic storefronts, which we covered in ChatGPT Shopping for Shopify.

The feed fields that matter most for AI matching:

FieldWhy it matters for AI answersShopify note
TitleMatching specific promptsBrand, product type and the key attribute buyers search ("24-inch", "110V", "4-person")

ImagesVisual and comparison resultsSeveral angles plus in-use photos
ReviewsRatings shown on listingsMany Shopify review apps can send product reviews to Google

Merchant Center also enrolls stores automatically in its Store Quality program once products are approved. It rates areas such as shipping, returns and user ratings from "Low" to "Exceptional," and an exceptional overall score can earn a Top Quality Store badge. Those signals help shoppers trust unfamiliar stores, and product data quality is one of the few AI shopping levers you fully control.

Agentic checkout#

Google and Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced in January 2026. Eligible US merchants can let shoppers check out inside AI Mode and Gemini, and Shopify merchants manage direct checkout per channel in the admin. Availability is still expanding, so check your own admin rather than assuming. It helps conversion once a product is chosen. It doesn't decide which product gets chosen. That is still data and pages.

The controls, and why most stores should leave them alone#

Google gives site owners several ways to limit how content appears in AI features:

  • nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what can be shown from a page, in AI features and in regular snippets.
  • The Search generative AI control in Search Console (Settings), available to all sites since August 31, 2026, removes a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. Google says it is not a ranking signal for regular Search, and it does not override participation in Merchant Center or Google Ads. Exclusion usually takes a day or two.
  • Google-Extended controls use of your content for training Gemini models. It doesn't control whether you appear in Search.

For publishers, opting out can be a reasonable trade. For most stores, it removes you from the research stage of the purchase, where buyers form their shortlist. We recommend it only for specific pages, such as paid or gated content, not for a whole store.

How to measure it#

Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report. It shows impressions when links to your site appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, grouped by page, country, device and date. It shows impressions only, no clicks, and it has the usual 1,000-row limit.

Clicks from AI features are still counted inside the regular Web search type, mixed with everything else. The practical approach:

  1. Export Generative AI impressions by page.
  2. Export Web clicks and conversions by the same pages.
  3. Compare month over month. Pages gaining AI impressions while holding clicks are winning. Pages gaining AI impressions while losing clicks are feeding answers without getting visits, and may need a stronger reason to click: a calculator, a comparison table, product blocks, stock and price.

In Shopify, compare revenue from the pages that gained AI impressions. For high-ticket stores, branded search growth in Search Console is often the clearest sign that AI research is turning into buyers.

A 30-day plan#

  1. Week 1: eligibility. Confirm key collections, guides and products are indexed in Search Console, with no stray nosnippet tags. Check the Search generative AI setting hasn't been switched off.
  2. Week 1: baseline. Pull the Generative AI report and list your top research queries. Record which ones show AI Overviews and who gets cited.
  3. Week 2: feed. Fix Merchant Center disapprovals, product categories, GTINs, titles and return policies. Check Store Quality ratings.
  4. Week 3: pages. Pick five research queries where competitors get cited. Build or rebuild the page that answers each sub-question, answer first, specs in text.
  5. Week 4: consistency. Align warranty terms, dimensions and prices across product pages, feed, Amazon and third-party listings.

Then repeat monthly. AI Overviews change as Google changes models, so a single snapshot tells you little. The trend over three to six months is what matters.

The short version#

AI Overviews and AI Mode don't reward tricks. They reward stores whose pages answer the sub-questions behind a product search and whose product data is complete enough to match. Get indexed, cover the research questions with real pages, clean your Merchant Center feed and measure impressions and clicks together. Our Google AI Overviews service does exactly that for Shopify brands.

Questions people ask about this

Can I pay to appear in Google AI Overviews?

Not as a cited source. Organic supporting links are chosen by Google’s systems. Google Ads can appear in and around AI Overviews and AI Mode in some markets, but that is paid placement, separate from citations. For organic visibility, the levers are indexing, pages that answer the sub-questions and complete Merchant Center data.

Do I need structured data to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup required for its AI features. Product structured data is still worth having: it supports product rich results and merchant listings, and it keeps prices and availability unambiguous. Just make sure it matches your Merchant Center feed and your visible page content.

Should my store opt out of AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Rarely. The Search generative AI control in Search Console removes your whole site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features. Google says it does not affect regular rankings, but it takes you out of the research stage where buyers build shortlists. Use snippet controls on specific pages instead if you have content you need to protect.

Why is my store cited for some product searches but not others?

Usually because of coverage. AI answers fan out into many sub-searches, and you get cited where one of your pages ranks for a sub-question and answers it clearly. Where you have no matching page, or specs are hidden in images, a competitor’s guide wins. Mapping sub-questions to pages usually closes most of the gap.

How long does it take to get cited in AI Overviews?

For a site that already ranks, new or improved pages can start appearing within weeks of being indexed. For a newer site, it follows the underlying rankings, which usually takes months. Product data fixes in Merchant Center tend to show up faster than content work because they apply as soon as the feed is reprocessed.
