# Shopify Plus migration for brands that have outgrown one store

The Plus upgrade itself changes no URLs. What usually comes with it does: merging stores, folding country stores into Shopify Markets, new domains and new hreflang. That is where rankings move, and that is the part we plan.

## Which Plus migration are you actually doing?

### Shopify to Shopify Plus

A plan change on the same store. URLs, content and rankings stay where they are. The SEO opportunity comes later: B2B, more redirects, more markets.

### Store consolidation

Two brands or two stores become one. Overlapping products need a single winning URL, and one domain usually gets retired with a full redirect map.

### Expansion stores to Markets

brand.co.uk, brand.de and brand.com.au move into one store using Markets subfolders or domains. URLs, hreflang and sometimes domains all change at once.

## Where Plus consolidations go wrong

### Hand-built hreflang left behind

Separate stores need custom hreflang code to point at each other. Once markets move into one store, old tags and new tags can conflict.

### Country domains redirected to one homepage

brand.de pointed at brand.com/de wholesale. Every German product and collection URL loses its match and its rankings.

### Translations lost in the move

A German store written by a native team becomes a machine translation inside Markets. Rankings follow the quality down.

### Duplicate products across stores

The same product on two merged stores, with two handles and two review sets. Without a decision, Google picks, and not always well.

### Market-specific redirects missed

Shopify notes that locale-specific redirects need their own rule for each market subfolder. Map only the primary market and the rest 404.

### Search Console left on the old setup

New subfolders and domains need their own properties and sitemaps checked, or problems in one market stay invisible for months.

## Expansion stores compared with one Plus store on Markets

| | Separate expansion stores | One Plus store with Markets |
|---|---|---|
| UK product | brand.co.uk/products/oak-table | brand.com/en-gb/products/oak-table or kept on brand.co.uk |
| German collection | brand.de/collections/esstische | brand.com/de/collections/esstische |
| Hreflang | Custom code linking separate stores | Generated by Shopify across markets in one store |
| Translations | Separate product records per store | Translated fields on one product record |
| Redirect capacity | Up to 100,000 per standard store | Up to 20 million on Plus |
| Sitemaps | One per store and domain | Market URLs listed in Shopify-generated sitemaps |
| Reviews | Split across stores | One review set per product |

## Our Plus consolidation process

1. **Benchmark each store and market** (Weeks 1 to 2): Rankings, clicks and revenue per store, per country and per page type, so every market has its own baseline.

2. **Choose the market structure** (Week 2): Subfolders or country domains, which languages, which currencies. We base the choice on where your rankings and links sit today.

3. **Resolve duplicates** (Weeks 2 to 3): One product record and one handle for each item that existed in several stores, with reviews merged and translations attached.

4. **Map every market** (Weeks 3 to 4): A redirect map per old store and per market subfolder, plus domain-level redirects for any domain being retired.

5. **Check hreflang and translations** (Weeks 4 to 5): We remove hand-built hreflang, confirm Shopify output on each market and check translated titles, handles and meta.

6. **Launch and monitor per market** (Day 0 to 90): Search Console checks by country and subfolder for 90 days, so a drop in one market is caught early.

## What Plus changes, and what it does not

### Upgrading to Plus

Moving a store from a standard Shopify plan to Plus keeps the same store, the same URLs and the same content. There is nothing to redirect. The SEO value comes after: a redirect limit of 20 million instead of 100,000, B2B catalogs for wholesale buyers, and room to run many markets from one store. If that is your situation, you want [Shopify Plus SEO](/shopify-plus-seo/) more than a migration.

### Consolidating stores

When two stores merge, we decide which domain stays, which products overlap and which URL wins for each overlap. The losing URLs redirect to the winner, and reviews are merged so the surviving page keeps its star rating. Customer accounts can be imported into the surviving store, but passwords do not carry over.

### Expansion stores into Markets

This is the move with the most moving parts. Separate country stores often hold content written by native teams, and that content is why they rank. We keep it by importing translations onto the matching product and collection records, not by re-translating from English. Where a country domain has strong links of its own, keeping it as a Markets domain can be safer than folding it into a subfolder.

Shopify generates hreflang for markets inside one store. Any custom hreflang code that linked the old stores together has to come out, or the two sets conflict. We check the output on every market template before launch.

### Going the other way

Sometimes the right answer is to split a market into its own expansion store: different catalog, different pricing rules, different legal entity. We plan that move with the same care.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does upgrading from Shopify to Shopify Plus affect SEO?

Not directly. The upgrade is a plan change on the same store, so URLs, content, redirects and rankings stay as they are. What matters for SEO is what you do next, such as consolidating stores, adding markets or launching B2B. Those changes carry migration risk and deserve a plan before any URLs move.

### Should we use Markets subfolders or keep separate country domains?

It depends on where your authority sits. Subfolders on one strong domain are simpler and share link equity across markets. A country domain with its own strong backlinks and rankings can be kept as a Markets domain instead of being folded in. We look at links, rankings and revenue per market before recommending either.

### How is hreflang handled after moving expansion stores into Markets?

Shopify generates hreflang tags for the markets and languages inside one store. The custom hreflang code that linked your old separate stores must be removed, or the two sets of tags conflict. We check the generated tags on product, collection and content templates in every market before and after launch.

### What happens to duplicate products when two Shopify stores merge?

Each duplicate gets one surviving product record and handle, usually the URL with more traffic, links or reviews. The other URL redirects to it, reviews are merged and translations are attached to the surviving record. Leaving both live on one domain splits signals and lets Google choose which one to rank.

### Do we need separate redirects for each market subfolder?

Sometimes. Shopify applies a redirect created on the primary domain across market subfolders, but a locale-specific redirect, such as an old German URL going to a new German URL, needs its own rule for that subfolder. For store consolidations we build a redirect map per old store and per market so nothing is left to chance.
