Shopify now sends your catalog to ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode for you. Being included is the easy part. Being the product an assistant recommends depends on your data, your reviews and your pages, and that is the work we do.

## What changed in a year of AI shopping

This area has moved fast, and some early announcements did not last. Here is the short version, as of September 2026.

- **September 2025.** OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol it developed with Stripe. It started with Etsy sellers in the US, with Shopify merchants announced as coming next.
- **December 2025.** Shopify launched agentic storefronts, which syndicate a store's products through Shopify Catalog to AI channels without the merchant building an integration.
- **March 2026.** OpenAI scaled back native Instant Checkout. For Shopify merchants in ChatGPT, products are shown in the conversation and checkout finishes on the merchant's own store, in an in-app browser on mobile or a new tab on desktop. Orders land in Shopify admin as usual. Around the same time, Shopify switched agentic storefronts on by default for eligible merchants.
- **May 2026.** Shopify stores began serving agent-facing files automatically, including /agents.md, /llms.txt and a /sitemap_agentic_discovery.xml that points agents to them.
- **Now.** Microsoft Copilot supports checkout inside the conversation for eligible Shopify merchants through the Universal Commerce Protocol that Shopify and Google developed. Google is rolling out the same kind of checkout in AI Mode and Gemini, starting with select US merchants.

Expect this to keep changing. We check the current state for your store before recommending anything.

## How Shopify products reach each AI channel

| | How products get there | Where checkout happens |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog, plus web crawling | On your store, in an in-app browser or new tab |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | In the conversation, for eligible merchants |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google & YouTube channel, Merchant Center, Shopify Catalog | In-chat checkout rolling out to select US merchants |
| Perplexity and others | Web search and merchant programs | Varies; usually on your store |

## Included in the catalog, still not recommended

### Thin product data

A title, a price and three photos. The assistant has nothing to match against "quiet", "under-counter" or "fits a 10 by 12 room".

### Variants that do not make sense

Options named "Style 1" and "Style 2", missing GTINs or brand fields. The agent cannot tell what it would be buying.

### Unclear policies

Shipping costs, delivery times and return terms that are hard to find or contradict each other. Agents compare these directly.

### No reviews on the store

Ratings are one of the first things a shopping answer shows. Products with none look like a risk next to products with hundreds.

### Stock and price out of sync

Apps or feeds that override Shopify prices, or inventory that is not tracked. Mismatches lose trust with buyers and with the platforms.

### Channel switched off

Agentic storefront settings changed, a channel opted out, or products set to unlisted. Easy to miss, easy to fix.

## The agentic commerce checklist for Shopify

### Agentic storefront settings checked

ChatGPT, Copilot and Google channels confirmed on for the markets you sell to.

### Complete product records

Descriptive titles, full descriptions, options, images, price, availability, brand and GTIN where you have them.

### Attributes as metafields

Size, material, capacity, power and fit stored as structured data, not buried in images.

### Shopify product taxonomy

Every product in the right standard category, so agents can match it to what buyers ask.

### Clear shipping and returns

Policies that agree across your policy pages, product pages and checkout.

### Reviews collected on-site

Ratings on your own store, marked up with Product schema.

### Agent files reviewed

What /agents.md and /llms.txt say about your store, customized through theme templates if needed.

### Tracking in place

AI channel orders and referral sessions reported separately in Shopify and GA4.

## Shopify handles the plumbing. The recommendation is earned.

For Shopify merchants, there is no protocol integration to build. Shopify maintains the connections to each AI channel and keeps your prices and stock current through Shopify Catalog.

What Shopify cannot do is decide which store an assistant recommends. That comes from the same inputs as the rest of GEO: product data that answers the buyer's question, reviews, consistent brand facts, and pages that rank and get cited. Third-party tracking in mid-2026 suggested ChatGPT's shopping answers were leaning more on integrated product feeds than on open-web pages, which makes the quality of your catalog data matter more, not less.

That is why our ChatGPT Shopping work starts inside the Shopify admin, with products and metafields, before it touches content.

- Catalog audit: every product scored for completeness

- Metafield and taxonomy clean-up

- Review collection and schema

- Buying guides that answer the questions agents ask

## Who gains most from agentic shopping

### High-ticket products

A $4,000 sauna or a $2,500 e-bike is not usually bought in one chat. But the shortlist is increasingly made in one. Agents compare dimensions, power requirements, warranty and delivery. Stores that publish those details in structured form get onto the shortlist. See [high-ticket brands](/high-ticket-brands/).

### Chinese brands selling to the US

Agentic storefronts for ChatGPT are live for Shopify merchants selling to US buyers, regardless of where the store is based. For Shenzhen and Guangzhou brands that have been Amazon-only, that is a new route to American buyers. It also raises the bar for native-English product data and trust signals. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can customers buy my Shopify products inside ChatGPT?

They can find and choose them inside ChatGPT. As of September 2026, checkout for Shopify merchants in ChatGPT finishes on your own store, opened in an in-app browser on mobile or a new tab on desktop, and the order appears in Shopify admin. Copilot supports in-conversation checkout for eligible merchants, and Google is rolling it out in AI Mode and Gemini.

### Do I need to integrate the Agentic Commerce Protocol myself?

Not on Shopify. Shopify connects your store to AI channels through agentic storefronts and Shopify Catalog, and handles the protocols for each platform. Your job is the quality of what gets sent: product titles, descriptions, attributes, variants, images, policies and reviews. Brands on other platforms would have to apply to each program or build feeds themselves.

### Why are my products not showing in ChatGPT Shopping?

Common causes are agentic storefront settings switched off for ChatGPT, products set to unlisted, selling only to markets outside the current rollout, or product data too thin to match buyer questions. Even when products are included, ChatGPT shows only a few per answer, so reviews, clear specs and brand mentions decide who appears.

### Does selling through AI channels cost extra on Shopify?

Shopify has said there are no separate apps or integration fees for agentic storefronts beyond your normal plan and payment processing. That may change as programs evolve, so check the current terms in your admin. The real cost is the work of getting product data, reviews and content good enough to be recommended.

### Can I opt out of ChatGPT or Copilot?

Yes. Shopify lets you remove Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot in your admin. Your products can still appear through other routes, such as web crawling or ad feeds. To hide a product completely from these channels, Shopify says to set it as unlisted.
