# The GEO agency for Shopify stores

Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode which product to buy. The answer names a few brands and cites a few pages. We do the work that makes your store one of them, and we are honest about what can and cannot be measured.

## How AI assistants pick products and sources

An AI answer about products is built from a few inputs, and each one is something a store can influence.

**A search step.** ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features run their own searches before they answer. Google describes a "query fan-out" that issues several related searches at once. If your pages do not rank or are not in the index those systems use, they cannot be cited.

**Product data.** Shopping answers pull from structured product catalogs and feeds, including Shopify Catalog, which Shopify syndicates to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode. Price, availability, variants and attributes come from there.

**What the model already knows.** Brands that appear consistently across the web, with the same facts, get described more accurately and more often.

**What others say about you.** Review sites, comparison articles, forums and press give the assistant independent evidence to repeat.

- Pages that rank in Google and Bing get cited more often

- Clean product data feeds shopping answers

- Consistent brand facts get repeated accurately

- Third-party mentions give assistants something to trust

## Eight pieces of GEO work for Shopify brands

### Prompt and intent research

The questions buyers actually ask assistants in your category, grouped by intent, from "best" and "vs" to "is it worth it".

### Entity building

One consistent set of brand facts across your site, schema, social profiles, marketplaces and directories, so assistants describe you correctly.

### Citable content

Buying guides, comparisons and spec tables with clear answers near the top, written so a sentence can be quoted without losing its meaning.

### Catalog and feed readiness

Complete titles, attributes, variants, GTINs and policies, so your products show correctly through Shopify Catalog and merchant feeds.

### Schema

Product, Offer, AggregateRating, Organization, FAQ and Breadcrumb markup that matches what is on the page.

### Reviews and third-party mentions

More reviews on your store, and your brand in the review sites, lists and forums assistants read.

### AI crawler access

robots.txt, bot protection and rendering checked for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot, plus a sensible llms.txt.

### Measuring visibility and referrals

A fixed prompt set tracked across assistants, AI referral sessions and orders in Shopify, and Copilot citation data from Bing.

## GEO builds on SEO. It does not replace it.

| | Classic Shopify SEO | GEO for Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Where you win | A position on page one | A mention or citation inside an answer |
| Main inputs | Pages, links, technical health | Pages that rank, product data, brand facts, third-party mentions |
| Unit of content | A page targeting a keyword | A passage that answers a question on its own |
| Measurement | Search Console clicks and positions | Prompt tracking, AI referrals, Bing citation data |
| Precision | High, per keyword | Lower; answers vary by user and session |

## From audit to monthly AI visibility report

1. **AI visibility audit** (Weeks 1 to 2): We run 50 to 100 buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Copilot, and record who gets named and cited.

2. **Access and catalog fixes** (Weeks 2 to 4): Crawler access, schema, product data gaps and Shopify agentic storefront settings. The quickest wins usually sit here.

3. **Content and entity work** (Monthly): Guides, comparisons and collection copy written to be cited, plus consistent brand facts everywhere your brand appears.

4. **Mentions and reviews** (Monthly): Review collection on your store and outreach to the lists, review sites and publications assistants cite in your category.

5. **Measure and repeat** (Monthly): The same prompts re-run on a schedule, with dated screenshots, alongside AI referral sessions and orders from Shopify.

## What we can measure, and what nobody can

Any agency that shows you a precise "AI ranking" is simplifying. Here is what the data really looks like in September 2026.

### What is measurable

- **Referral sessions and orders.** Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and others show up as referrals in Shopify analytics and GA4. ChatGPT links usually carry a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag. Some visits arrive with no referrer at all, so these numbers undercount.
- **Copilot citations.** Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google.
- **Google AI features.** Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console, but inside the normal "Web" totals. They are not broken out separately.
- **Prompt tracking.** We run a fixed set of buyer prompts on a schedule and record whether your brand is named, cited or recommended, with dated screenshots.

### What is not

AI answers change by user, location, session history and the day you ask. There is no single position to report. Prompt tracking is a sample, and we report it as a trend over many prompts, never as a promise that a given prompt will name you tomorrow.

### Why SEO still matters most

Shopify's own published data for early 2026 showed AI-referred sessions and orders growing many times over year on year, and converting well. It also showed organic search still sending more sessions than all AI platforms combined. That is why we treat GEO as a layer on top of [Shopify SEO](/shopify-seo-services/), not a replacement. Most of what earns AI citations also earns rankings.

See how we document proof on the [AI search results page](/geo-agency/results/), or start with the [Shopify llms.txt generator](/tools/shopify-llms-txt-generator/). We write about this regularly on the [AI search blog](/blog/category/ai-search/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the work of getting your brand named, recommended and cited in answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. For a Shopify store it combines pages that rank, clean product data, consistent brand facts, reviews and third-party mentions. AEO, AI SEO and LLM SEO are other names for the same work.

### Is GEO different from SEO?

It overlaps heavily. AI assistants run searches before answering, so pages that rank in Google and Bing are cited more often. GEO adds work SEO often skips: product feed and catalog readiness, brand consistency across the web, passages written to be quoted, AI crawler access, and measurement through prompt tracking and AI referral data rather than rankings alone.

### Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend our products?

No, and nobody honestly can. AI answers vary by user, location, session and date, and the assistants change how they retrieve products often. What we can do is fix the inputs they rely on, track a fixed set of buyer prompts over time with dated screenshots, and show you the trend in mentions, citations and AI referral revenue.

### How do you measure AI visibility for a Shopify store?

Four ways: a fixed prompt set re-run on a schedule across the major assistants, AI referral sessions and orders in Shopify analytics and GA4, Copilot citation data from Bing Webmaster Tools, and Search Console totals, which include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Each source has gaps, so we report them side by side.

### Should we block AI crawlers on our Shopify store?

For most stores, no. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search answers, and blocking Bingbot affects Copilot. You can allow search crawlers while blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or Google-Extended if you prefer. We check robots.txt and any bot protection on your store so the crawlers you want are not blocked by accident.

### Does llms.txt help with AI search?

It is a low-cost file, and Shopify now generates one automatically along with an agents.md file. But there is little public evidence that major assistants rely on llms.txt when choosing what to cite, and Google has said it does not use it for Search. We keep it accurate and spend most of the effort on content, product data and mentions.
