A fake Shopify store copying your photos and name can outrank you for your own brand. This is the order we report clones in (Shopify, Google, registrar, ads, payments) and how we take the brand search results back.

## Key takeaways

- Work three tracks at once: take the clone down where it is hosted and paid, remove the copied pages from Google Search, and strengthen your own brand results so the next clone gets no clicks.
- Find the host before you file anything. A page source containing myshopify.com or an A record of 23.227.38.65 means Shopify, and Shopify has its own trademark, copyright and fraud forms.
- Copyright is often the fastest route. You own your product photos and copy automatically, while Shopify trademark reports ask for registration numbers and countries.
- A DMCA notice to Google removes specific URLs from Search. It does not take the site offline, so file it alongside the host, registrar and payment reports.
- Clones outrank thin brand sites. Organization schema, an authorized retailers page, verified Merchant Center listings and pages for every brand + modifier query close the gap.

If a fake Shopify store is copying your brand and outranking you, work three tracks at the same time. Report the clone to everyone who hosts it and takes its money (Shopify, the domain registrar, Cloudflare, the payment processor and the ad platform). Ask Google to remove the copied pages from Search with a DMCA notice. Then strengthen your own brand search results, because takedowns remove one clone and a strong brand SERP stops the next one from getting clicks.

We see this most with [Chinese brands](/chinese-brands/) that built demand on Amazon and then launched a Shopify store. The product photos are good, the brand is searched, and the brand website is still thin. That combination is exactly what cloners look for. Below is the order we work in, with the official report form for each step.

## Why fake stores outrank the real brand

A fake store rarely beats you on SEO merit. It wins the click for one of five reasons:

- **It pays for the top of the page.** Clones run Meta and Google ads on your brand name and product names. An ad above your organic listing takes the click even when you rank #1.
- **Its domain looks official.** "brandname-official.shop" or "brandnameoutlet.com" reads as relevant for a brand query, and a searcher can't tell which one you own.
- **It got indexed first.** If your product pages are new, slow to index or blocked, Google may see the copied page before yours. Your original usually wins in the end, but "usually" can take weeks.
- **Your brand results are thin.** A brand site with 30 pages, no Organization markup and no third-party mentions gives Google little to anchor the brand to. Amazon-first brands often have more brand signals on Amazon than on their own domain.
- **The price is irresistible.** "70% off, today only" beats an honest price on click-through, even from lower down the page.

The first three you can report. The last two you fix on your own site, and that part is covered in Step 7.

## Step 1: Document the clone before you report it

Every form below asks for evidence, and clones disappear and reappear under new domains. Collect this once, in one shared folder, before you file anything.

**Evidence checklist (copy this):**

- Full-page screenshots with the date visible: home page, each copied product page, the contact and "about" pages, and the checkout page if it loads.
- A list of **every infringing URL**, one per line. Shopify and Google both ask for the specific pages, not just the home page.
- The matching URL of your original for each copied page, plus proof you created it: original photo files, the date you first published, your product listing history.
- Trademark registration numbers and the countries they cover.
- Ad evidence: Meta Ad Library screenshots with the Library ID, and screenshots of Google ads with the search you used.
- The WHOIS or RDAP record for the domain and the result of a DNS lookup (Step 2).
- Customer complaints from people who ordered from the clone thinking it was you. Remove their personal data before you forward anything.
- An archived copy of the clone saved to the [Wayback Machine](https://web.archive.org/), so the evidence survives if the site changes.

> **Use one inbox for every report:** Takedown forms send confirmations and case numbers by email, and some pass your notice to the site owner. File everything from one business address (legal@ or brand@), never a personal one, and keep a sheet with the date, channel, case number and status of each report.

## Step 2: Find out where the fake store is hosted

The right form depends on who hosts the site. Two minutes of checking saves weeks of reporting to the wrong company.

1. Open the clone, view the page source (Ctrl+U or Cmd+Option+U) and search for **myshopify**. Shopify stores usually expose their internal store address, for example `Shopify.shop = "brandclone-123.myshopify.com"`. Copy that address into your reports; it identifies the store even after the custom domain changes.
2. Search the source for **cdn.shopify.com**. Images and scripts served from it are another Shopify signal.
3. Run a DNS lookup (`dig +short clone-domain.com` in a terminal, or any online DNS tool). Shopify tells merchants to point their A record to [23.227.38.65](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/domains/add-a-domain/connecting-domains/connect-domain-manual) and their www CNAME to shops.myshopify.com, and the IP can vary by region in the last number.
4. Look up the domain on [ICANN Lookup](https://lookup.icann.org/) to find the registrar and its abuse contact.

| What you find | What it means | Where to report |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `myshopify.com` in the source, 23.227.38.x IP | The clone runs on Shopify | Shopify's IP and fraud forms (Step 3) |
| Cloudflare nameservers or IPs | Cloudflare sits in front; the real host is hidden | [Cloudflare abuse form](https://www.cloudflare.com/trust-hub/reporting-abuse/), which passes reports to the host |
| Another host's IP | Self-hosted or another platform | That host's abuse contact |
| Any of the above | The domain is registered somewhere | The registrar's abuse contact from ICANN Lookup (Step 5) |

## Step 3: Report the fake Shopify store to Shopify

If the clone runs on Shopify, start at Shopify's [report a merchant](https://www.shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/report-a-merchant) page. It routes intellectual property, fraud, spam and phishing reports to separate forms. Pick the form that matches what was copied.

**Copyright (DMCA) for copied photos, videos and text.** Use Shopify's [copyright infringement form](https://www.shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/dmca). You own the copyright in the product photos and descriptions you created, and you can file without a registered trademark. Shopify's [copyright policy](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/compliance/intellectual-property/copyright-policy) asks for a list of each individual page with the infringing content, a link to your original work, a good-faith statement and a statement under penalty of perjury. It also warns that a copy of your notice, including your contact details, may be given to the store owner.

**Trademark for your name and logo.** Use the [trademark infringement form](https://www.shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/trademark-infringement). Shopify's [trademark policy](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/compliance/intellectual-property/trademark-trade-dress-policy) asks for registration numbers, the countries of registration and the goods covered, plus the specific infringing URLs. If your mark isn't registered in the market the clone targets, lead with copyright instead.

**Fraud for stores that take money and don't deliver.** If customers are paying the clone and receiving nothing or counterfeits, also file through Shopify's [fraud form](https://www.shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/fraud) and attach redacted customer complaints.

What happens next: Shopify reviews the notice, removes content it finds valid and notifies the merchant, who can respond. Shopify's copyright policy says it terminates stores for repeat infringement and may disable a store for a single willful or egregious case. Shopify doesn't publish a response time, so plan in days to weeks, and expect a determined cloner to reopen elsewhere.

> **Report pages, not just the domain:** "brandclone.com is copying us" gets a slower answer than twenty product URLs, each matched to your original. The more precisely you map copy to original, the easier the notice is to approve.

## Step 4: Remove the copied pages from Google Search

A takedown at the host removes the site. Google needs its own reports to drop the pages from search results and to stop ads.

- **Copied content in organic results:** file Google's [DMCA request for Search](https://reportcontent.google.com/forms/dmca_search), listing each infringing URL. Google removes approved URLs from its results; the site itself stays online. Google's [legal removal help](https://support.google.com/legal/answer/3110420) covers other legal grounds and other Google products.
- **Phishing or card harvesting:** report the site to [Google Safe Browsing](https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/). If it's confirmed, browsers that use Safe Browsing show visitors a warning.
- **Spam tactics:** Google's [spam report](https://search.google.com/search-console/report-spam) is listed on its [report quality issues](https://developers.google.com/search/help/report-quality-issues) page. Treat it as a signal to Google, not a takedown.
- **Ads on your brand or products:** Google Ads prohibits [counterfeit goods](https://support.google.com/adspolicy/answer/176017) and links a counterfeit complaint form from that policy. Trademark issues in ad text go through the [Google Ads trademark troubleshooter](https://support.google.com/adspolicy/troubleshooter/14327740). Shopping listings fall under Merchant Center's [counterfeit products policy](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6149993).

For organic results, the copyright route is the one that works most reliably. Trademark complaints mainly apply to ads and Shopping, so photos and copy you created are your strongest evidence in Search.

## Step 5: Go to the registrar, host and Cloudflare

The registrar controls the domain name. The host controls the server. Report to both.

- **Registrar:** find it and its abuse email on [ICANN Lookup](https://lookup.icann.org/). Under ICANN's [registrar agreement](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/abuse-2014-01-29-en), accredited registrars must publish an abuse contact and investigate reports. In practice, registrars act fastest on fraud, phishing and malware, and often send pure IP disputes back to the host or the courts, so frame the report around fraud when customers are losing money.
- **Host:** send the same evidence pack to the host's abuse contact. If the clone is behind Cloudflare, use the [Cloudflare abuse form](https://www.cloudflare.com/trust-hub/reporting-abuse/); Cloudflare generally doesn't host the content and forwards reports to the hosting provider.
- **Lookalike domains:** if the domain itself contains your trademark, the [UDRP process](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/help/dndr/udrp-en) can transfer it to you. It costs filing fees and takes weeks, so it's worth it for a domain that keeps coming back. Take legal advice before filing.

## Step 6: Cut off the clone's ads and payments

Most clones live on paid social traffic and a card processor. Removing either hurts them faster than a domain takedown.

**Ads.** Search your brand and hero product names in the [Meta Ad Library](https://www.facebook.com/ads/library/) every week. Report ads you don't recognize, and file Meta's [trademark report](https://www.facebook.com/help/440684869305015) or copyright report for the ad creative. Meta's [intellectual property page](https://transparency.meta.com/reports/intellectual-property/protecting-intellectual-property-rights/) explains Brand Rights Protection, a tool for enrolled rights holders to find and report misuse across ads, Shops, Marketplace and Instagram. Taking down the ad often stops the traffic before the store is gone.

**Payments.** The checkout page shows which payment options the clone uses. For PayPal, use its [infringement report process](https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/what-is-paypals-infringement-report-process-help271). For Stripe, send an [IP infringement notice](https://support.stripe.com/questions/submit-an-intellectual-property-(ip)-infringement-notice); Stripe can't remove the store, but it can stop processing its payments. Customers who already paid should dispute the charge with their card issuer; Stripe [says](https://support.stripe.com/questions/reporting-a-fraudulent-transaction-from-a-business-using-stripe) that bank disputes pass the details to Stripe for its fraud work.

## Step 7: Outrank the clone by defending your brand search results

Takedowns are reactive. The long-term fix is to make your brand results so clearly yours that a clone has nowhere to land. This is SEO work, and it's the part the brand-protection guides leave out.

1. **Check your brand queries in Search Console.** Go to Performance > Search results, add a Query filter that contains your brand name, and sort by impressions. Look for brand queries where your average position is worse than 1 or your click-through rate is falling. Then search each one yourself: brand + "reviews", "legit", "discount code", "official site", "outlet" and "sale" are where clones tend to appear.
2. **Tell Google who you are.** Add [Organization structured data](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/organization) with your logo, official URL and sameAs links to your Amazon store and social profiles, and [WebSite markup for your site name](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/site-names). Our [brand entity guide](/blog/brand-entity-chinese-companies/) covers the Knowledge Panel side, and our [schema markup service](/shopify-seo-services/schema-markup/) handles the markup itself.
3. **Publish an authorized retailers page.** List your official domain, your Amazon storefront and every real reseller. Add a line: "Any other website selling [Brand] products is not affiliated with us." It gives customers a way to check, and it ranks for "is [brand] legit" style searches.
4. **Own every brand + modifier query with a real page.** Reviews, warranty, shipping, discount codes and "[brand] vs [competitor]". If you don't publish the answer, a clone or a scam-review site will. Our guide to [reputation SEO for Chinese brands](/blog/chinese-brand-reputation-seo/) shows how, and if AliExpress or marketplace sellers already hold those spots, see [why AliExpress outranks your brand name](/blog/brand-serp-outranked-by-aliexpress/).
5. **Get indexed before the copies.** Submit your sitemap and use URL Inspection to request indexing on new product launches, so your original is in the index before anyone scrapes it.
6. **Verify your Merchant Center feed.** A verified brand feed with GTINs puts your real listings in Shopping results and gives Google a clear source for your products. Our guide to [Google Shopping free listings on Shopify](/blog/shopify-google-shopping-free-listings/) covers the setup.
7. **Run brand ads while takedowns are in progress.** A few dollars a day on your own brand name keeps your store at the top while reports work through.

## How to stop the next fake store

- **Register trademarks in every market you sell to.** Shopify, Meta and Google Ads all move faster with a registration number. File in the US, UK and EU before you scale ads there.
- **Keep your originals.** Store original photo files and publishing dates. They're your proof in every copyright notice.
- **Monitor weekly.** Search your brand name and top products, check the Meta Ad Library, set up Google Alerts for your brand, and run Google Lens on your hero images to find reused photos. Certificate transparency search ([crt.sh](https://crt.sh/)) shows new domains that include your brand as soon as they get an SSL certificate.
- **Tell customers what's real.** A short "official store" note in your footer and order emails, linked to the authorized retailers page, cuts confusion and chargeback complaints aimed at you.
- **Build the site so it can't be out-ranked by a copy.** Clones copy product pages. They rarely copy 300 collection pages, buying guides and years of links. A deep, well-linked site is the best defence we know, and it's the same work that grows revenue. See how we approach it in our [Google SEO guide for Chinese brands](/blog/google-seo-for-chinese-brands/).

None of this is legal advice. For UDRP filings, cease-and-desist letters or court action, work with an IP lawyer in the relevant market.

## FAQs

### How do I report a fake Shopify store?

Start at Shopify's report a merchant page and choose the matching form: copyright (DMCA) for copied photos and text, trademark for your name and logo, or fraud if customers are losing money. List every infringing URL individually and include the store's myshopify.com address from the page source. Then report the same URLs to Google, the registrar and the payment processor.

### Can I get a copycat website taken down if my trademark is not registered?

Often, yes. Copyright in photos, videos and product descriptions belongs to whoever created them, so you can file DMCA notices with Shopify, the host and Google without a trademark. Trademark routes are weaker without a registration, since Shopify's trademark form asks for registration numbers and countries. Register your mark in each market you sell to so the next report is simpler.

### Why is a fake website ranking above my real website?

Usually because it pays for ads above your listing, uses a domain that looks official, or got its copied pages indexed before yours. Thin brand sites make it easier: few pages, no Organization markup and few third-party mentions. Takedowns remove the clone, but the lasting fix is a stronger brand result with pages for reviews, warranty, discount codes and authorized retailers.

### Is copying someone else’s website illegal?

Copying original photos, videos and written copy without permission is copyright infringement in most countries, and using another brand’s name or logo to sell goods can infringe its trademark. A similar layout or theme alone is much harder to act on, since many stores use the same Shopify themes. Laws differ by country, so speak to an IP lawyer before sending legal threats.

### How long does it take to take down a fake website?

There is no published deadline from Shopify, Google or most hosts. Expect days to weeks per channel, and faster action when the evidence is precise and customers are being defrauded. Ads and payment accounts often go before the site itself. Plan for the clone to reappear on a new domain, and keep your evidence folder and report log ready to reuse.
