When AliExpress, Amazon or resellers outrank your Shopify store for your own brand and model numbers, Google is choosing their pages as the better answer. This is how Chinese brands win back their brand SERP.

## Key takeaways

- Your brand SERP is every result for your brand name, your brand plus product, and your model numbers. Marketplaces ranking below you is normal; marketplaces ranking above you for your own name is a fixable signal problem.
- Factory model codes shared with OEM clients and AliExpress sellers are the most common Chinese-brand weakness. Give products brand-owned names and keep the factory code as the MPN.
- Make your Shopify store the verifiable official source: one brand name in the Vendor field, Organization and Product schema with GTINs, Merchant Center, and Manufacturer Center for brand owners.
- Reseller agreements should cover content as well as price: approved images and copy, no brand name in store names or domains, no bidding on your brand terms.
- Pages marketplaces can’t copy, such as manuals, compatibility tables, warranty registration and honest comparisons, are what make your site the most useful result for brand searches.

When AliExpress, Amazon or a reseller outranks your Shopify store for your own brand or model number, Google has decided their page is the more useful or more trusted result for that search. Winning back your brand SERP means giving Google clear evidence that your site is the official source: product names only you use, consistent entity signals, complete Merchant Center data, reseller rules that stop copied content, and pages a marketplace listing can't match.

This happens to Chinese brands more than most, for reasons that start in the factory. Zack has worked with Amazon and Shopify brands from Shenzhen for more than eight years, and the pattern repeats: the product is good, the brand is real, and a search for the brand's own model number returns ten marketplace listings before the brand's site.

## What a brand SERP is for a product brand

A brand SERP is the search results page for your brand name. For a product brand, the useful definition is wider: every results page where the searcher already knows who you are.

- **Your brand name**, for example "[Brand]".
- **Brand plus product**, such as "[Brand] power station" or "[Brand] 1200".
- **Model numbers**, often typed without the brand.
- **Brand plus intent**: "[Brand] reviews", "[Brand] warranty", "is [Brand] legit".
- **Brand comparisons**: "[Brand] vs [competitor]".

These searches come from people who have already heard of you, often from Amazon, a review or an AI answer, and they convert well. Whoever ranks first gets the sale.

## Why AliExpress and resellers outrank the brand

A marketplace ranking second for your brand name is normal. It becomes a problem when it ranks first, or when your site doesn't appear for brand plus product and model searches at all. The usual causes:

1. **Shared model numbers.** Chinese factories name products with internal codes. The same code goes onto OEM clients' products, 1688 listings and dozens of AliExpress stores. A search for that code is a search for a commodity, and marketplaces own commodity searches.
2. **Copied content.** Resellers use your photos and descriptions, often before your own site is live or indexed. When several pages carry the same content, Google picks the one it considers [most complete and useful](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/canonicalization). A large marketplace with reviews, prices and Q&A often wins.
3. **Thin brand pages.** A 60-word product description translated from the factory spec sheet can't beat a listing with 400 reviews.
4. **Missing product data.** Marketplaces send full feeds to Google with brand, GTIN, price and reviews. Many brand sites aren't in Merchant Center at all, so they're missing from product grids and Shopping results.
5. **An unclear entity.** The brand appears as a pinyin company name on one site, an English brand on Amazon and a different spelling on Shopify. Google can't tell they're the same company.
6. **Domain strength.** Amazon and AliExpress have far more authority than a brand site with a young domain. You won't beat that on authority, only on relevance and official-source signals.

If the problem is counterfeit stores and site clones rather than marketplaces, the fix starts with takedowns, not SEO: see our guide to [dealing with a fake Shopify store copying yours](/blog/fake-shopify-store/). This guide is about legitimate or grey-market listings of your real product.

## Step 1: Audit your brand SERP

Search each query type from the country you sell to, not from China. Use a US connection, or add `&gl=us&hl=en` to the Google URL, in a private window. Record who ranks, in which position, and which features appear.

| Query type | Example | Who should be #1 | What to record |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Brand | [Brand] | Your homepage | Knowledge panel, sitelinks, marketplace positions, ads on your name |
| Brand + product | [Brand] air fryer | Your collection page | Whether your collection or product page ranks at all |
| Brand + model | [Brand] AF-5000 | Your product page | Marketplace and reseller listings above you |
| Model only | AF-5000 | Your product page or a support page | How many sellers use the same code |
| Brand + reviews | [Brand] reviews | A trusted review page, or your reviews | Reddit threads, complaint sites, your own reviews |
| Brand + vs | [Brand] vs [competitor] | Your comparison page or a fair review | Who frames the comparison |

Then check Search Console. The [branded queries filter](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/11/search-console-branded-filter) in the Performance report splits branded from non-branded queries. Sort branded queries by impressions and look for ones where your average position is worse than 1 to 3: those are the searches marketplaces are taking. Finally, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity about your brand and your top model and note which pages they cite. Our guide on [reputation SEO for Chinese brands](/blog/chinese-brand-reputation-seo/) covers the "legit" and "reviews" searches in more depth.

## Step 2: Give products names only you use

This is the fix most Chinese brands skip, and it's often the one that matters most.

- **Create a brand-owned product name** for every hero product: "[Brand] TrailCore 1200" instead of "X7-1200". Use it on your site, Amazon, packaging, manuals and press.
- **Keep the factory code as the MPN.** Put it in the spec table and Product structured data, because some buyers still search it. You want to rank for it without depending on it.
- **Don't sell the identical SKU as white label.** If your factory ships the same product under the same code to other sellers, you can't stop them listing it. Change something for your brand: a colour, a bundle, a design detail, a longer warranty.
- **Register GTINs to your brand.** Barcodes from GS1 under your own company prefix tie each product to you. Enter them in the Barcode field on each Shopify variant.
- **Trademark the brand and, where it's worth it, the product line names** in each market you sell to.

The payoff is simple. A search for "TrailCore 1200" has one official answer, and it's you.

## Step 3: Make your Shopify store the official source

Google and AI assistants look for consistent signals that one site is the brand's home. On Shopify, most of them are quick to set.

- **Vendor field.** Shopify's built-in product schema and many themes and feed apps take the brand from the product's Vendor, and a product with no vendor [defaults to your store name](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/managing-vendor-info). Set it to your brand name exactly, not "Shenzhen XYZ Technology Co., Ltd." or a supplier name.
- **Product structured data** with brand, GTIN, MPN, price, availability and reviews. Check it with Google's Rich Results Test. Google's [Product structured data documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/product) lists the properties.
- **Organization structured data** on the homepage with your name, logo, URL and `sameAs` links to your Amazon storefront, official marketplace stores and social profiles. See Google's [Organization markup guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/organization).
- **An About page** that names the company, the factory, the years in production, quality control, certifications and a Western support contact.
- **"Official store" signals** in the footer and on product pages: warranty only valid through authorized sellers, a list of authorized retailers, and a link to register a product.

We cover the wider setup in [brand entity building for Chinese companies](/blog/brand-entity-chinese-companies/) and in our [brand trust work for Chinese brands](/chinese-brands/brand-trust/).

## Step 4: Merchant Center and Manufacturer Center

Marketplaces win product grids and Shopping results partly because their data is complete. Match it.

- **Connect Google Merchant Center** through Shopify's Google & YouTube app so every product syncs with price, availability, images, brand and GTIN, and becomes eligible for [free listings](/blog/shopify-google-shopping-free-listings/).
- **Use the right brand attribute.** Google's [brand attribute rules](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324351) ask for the brand name shoppers recognize, which for your own products is your brand, and say GTIN and MPN help Google understand what you sell.
- **Claim Manufacturer Center.** [Google Manufacturer Center](https://support.google.com/manufacturers/answer/6124024) is free for brand owners and manufacturers. It lets you provide authoritative product information, images and descriptions that Google can use on Search and Shopping. It's built for brand owners and manufacturers, not resellers.

> **Check Merchant Center diagnostics first:** Disapproved products, missing GTINs and mismatched prices are common on Chinese brand stores that imported products from a spreadsheet. Fix the diagnostics before expecting product grid visibility.

## Step 5: Control what resellers publish

Most brands write reseller and distributor agreements about price and territory, and say nothing about content. Add content clauses. Have a lawyer in each market draft them, but these are the points we ask brands to cover:

- **Approved assets only.** Resellers use a reseller kit you provide: a different image set and shorter descriptions than your own site. Your best photos and long-form copy stay on your store.
- **No brand name in reseller store names or domains** without written permission.
- **No bidding on your brand terms** in Google Ads without permission, and no ads that imply they're the official store.
- **No new listings for unreleased models** and no creating listings under your brand without approval.
- **Advertised price rules (MAP)**, if they're lawful in that market. Marketplace listings far below your price pull clicks from your brand SERP.

On Amazon, assign authorized sellers the Reseller role in [Brand Registry](https://sell.amazon.com/blog/brand-registry-roles), which gives them limited brand access without exposing your analytics. Amazon lists creating new listings among the Reseller role's permissions, and sellers report that Amazon now requires the role to create new listings for enrolled brands, which makes assigning it deliberately more important.

## Step 6: Remove what infringes

Some listings aren't authorized resellers at all. If a listing uses your trademark without authorization or copies photos and text you own, you can act on it.

- **AliExpress, Alibaba.com, Lazada and Miravia:** file through Alibaba's [intellectual property protection platform](https://ipp.aidcgroup.net/) with your trademark registration and proof of copyright.
- **Amazon:** use Brand Registry's violation reporting.
- **Google Search:** request removal of pages that copy your content under copyright law through Google's legal removal process.

Takedowns clean up the SERP, but they don't make your page rank. A listing you remove today is replaced by another tomorrow if your own page is still the weakest result.

**Losing your own brand searches to marketplaces?** We audit your brand SERP from the US and EU, fix the entity and product data signals on your Shopify store, and build the pages that make it the official answer, from Shenzhen, in English and Chinese. ## Don't forget ads and AI answers on your brand name

Two parts of the brand SERP sit outside organic rankings.

**Ads on your brand name.** Resellers and marketplace sellers often bid on your brand and model names, which pushes your organic result further down the page. Check the ads on each audit query. Where a reseller breaks your agreement, enforce it. Where anyone uses your trademark in ad text without permission, Google Ads has a trademark complaint process. Many brands also run a small campaign on their own name so the first result on the page is theirs.

**AI answers about your products.** Ask ChatGPT for the price or specs of your top model and it may cite an AliExpress listing with an old price and a wrong spec. The fix is the same as for Google: an official product page with complete, consistent facts in text and structured data, plus the same name used everywhere. Our guide to [how to rank in ChatGPT](/blog/how-to-rank-in-chatgpt/) covers the retrieval side.

## Step 7: Build pages marketplaces can't copy

The lasting fix is to be the most useful result for every brand search. A marketplace listing is a product box with reviews. Your store can be the brand's library.

- **Model support pages:** manuals, setup videos, firmware, spare parts and FAQs for each model, including discontinued ones. These rank for model numbers and "[model] manual" searches that marketplaces don't answer.
- **Compatibility tables:** which accessories fit which models, which vehicles, which voltages.
- **Warranty registration and authorized seller lists**, so buyers know where the warranty is valid.
- **Collection pages** mapped to buyer keywords, so "[Brand] + category" lands on a page built for it. Our [collection page SEO service](/shopify-seo-services/collection-page-seo/) does this at scale.
- **Honest comparisons** against named competitors. See [comparison pages that win the research phase](/blog/best-x-comparison-pages/).
- **Reviews on your own site**, not only on Amazon.

A 30-product Chinese automotive accessories brand we worked with started at DR 29 with Amazon-first traffic. We built 360+ pages around its products and buyer keywords, fixed international SEO issues, and it now outranks all competitors for every keyword in its niche, with $758,772.94 in organic revenue in 7 months. ## A brand SERP checklist for Chinese brands

Copy this into your project tracker:

- One English brand name, spelled the same on Shopify, Amazon, AliExpress, packaging, manuals and social profiles
- Brand-owned names for hero products; factory codes kept as MPN only
- GTINs registered to your brand and entered in each Shopify variant's Barcode field
- Shopify Vendor field set to the brand name on every product
- Organization structured data with `sameAs` links; Product structured data with brand, GTIN, MPN, price and reviews
- About page with company, factory, certifications and a Western support contact
- Merchant Center connected, diagnostics clean; Manufacturer Center claimed
- Reseller agreements with content, domain and brand-bidding clauses; Brand Registry roles assigned
- Separate reseller asset kit; best photos and long copy kept on your own site
- Support pages, compatibility tables and warranty registration for every model
- Monthly brand SERP check from the US or EU, plus Search Console's branded queries

## How long it takes

Brand name searches can improve within weeks once entity signals, Merchant Center and product data are fixed, because Google already suspects you're the official source and needs confirmation. Brand plus model searches take longer, typically months, because you're competing with many listings on strong domains and need new names, new content and links. Bare factory model codes may never be fully yours if other sellers keep using them, which is why Step 2 matters.

No one can guarantee a position. What you can control is whether your store is the most complete, most consistent and most clearly official answer for your own name. Our guide to [Google SEO for Chinese brands](/blog/google-seo-for-chinese-brands/) covers what comes after the brand SERP: ranking for the category searches where buyers haven't heard of you yet.

## FAQs

### Why does Amazon rank higher than my website for my own brand?

Usually because Google sees Amazon’s page as more useful for that search: it has reviews, price, availability and huge domain authority, and it may carry the same content as your site. Brand sites lose when their product pages are thin, product data is missing from Merchant Center, or the brand name is inconsistent across sites. Fixing those signals usually moves your site back above Amazon for your brand name.

### What is a brand SERP?

A brand SERP is the search results page for your brand name. For product brands it also includes searches for your brand plus product type, your model numbers, and brand plus reviews or comparisons. These searchers already know you, so they convert well. Your goal is to own the top result for each, with marketplaces and reviews below your own pages.

### Can I stop resellers from using my product photos?

If you own the copyright in the photos, you can request removal of unauthorized copies through marketplace intellectual property tools, such as Alibaba’s IPP platform or Amazon Brand Registry, and through Google’s legal removal process. For authorized resellers, the better route is contractual: give them a separate approved image set and keep your best photos and copy exclusive to your own store.

### Should we stop selling on Amazon or AliExpress to help our site rank?

No. Marketplace sales are revenue, and marketplace listings ranking second or third for your brand is normal and even reassuring to buyers. The goal is for your store to rank first for your brand and your product names. Make your site the official source with better content and data, and use distinct product names and assets so listings don’t duplicate it.

### Does Google prefer the manufacturer’s website?

Not automatically. Google ranks the page it considers most useful for the query, and among duplicate pages it chooses the most complete one, which is often a large marketplace. Manufacturers win when their site is clearly the official source: consistent brand name, Organization and Product structured data, Merchant Center and Manufacturer Center data, and content a listing can’t match.
